Jar Burials through Space and Time
ABSTRACT
In Prehistoric and Protohistoric times, in Southeast Asia and Vietnam there were practiced various mortuary patterns and rituals, including flexed, extended, primary, and secondary or multiple burials... the mortuary containers also have been made from different materials and very diversity in shape.
The use of jars as mortuary containers has long history; this tradition may origin from Neolithic time and became popular in the Metal Age. Jar burials were developed mainly in Central Part of Vietnam (in so called Pre Sa Huynh and Sa Huynh cultures) and Southeast Asia Islands. In the Indo-Malaysian Archipelago, the area with a concentrated use of jars as mortuary containers was recognized as the trapezoidal belt of islands from Philippines in the north to southern Sumatra in the southwest and Sumba and the Moluccas in the southeast. The researchers also defined 03 horizons and 14 traditions of jar burials in this area. In Central Vietnam the practice of jar burials also was very complex in term of temporal and spatial dimensions and reflected the increasing of social complexity of the Metal Age communities.
